Bespoke Consultancy for Fostering Services

Every fostering service has its own strengths, challenges and development priorities.

COECT offers tailored policy review and development, virtual consultations and recommendations for service improvement.

Whether you are developing a therapeutic fostering model or strengthening an existing framework, we can work with your team to identify practical ways forward.

How We Can Help

We work collaboratively with fostering services to review and substantially redevelop their policies, ensuring therapeutic principles are reflected in everyday practice.

Our consultancy can include:

  • Policy review and gap analysis – identifying opportunities to strengthen existing policies and align them with regulatory requirements and best practice.

  • Therapeutic fostering framework development – embedding attachment-aware, trauma-informed and child-centred approaches throughout the service.

  • Safeguarding and child protection – strengthening policies to promote children's safety, wellbeing and protection.

  • Assessment and approval – developing policies that support the recruitment, assessment and ongoing development of therapeutic foster parents.

  • Matching and placement stability – promoting child-centred matching, fostering family/placement support and disruption prevention.

  • Foster parent support and wellbeing – strengthening reflective supervision, therapeutic support and foster parent resilience.

If your fostering service is looking to strengthen its therapeutic approach, we'd welcome the opportunity to discuss your needs.

Therapeutic Fostering Assessment (TFA)

Therapeutic Fostering Assessment (TFA), developed by Sarah Naish at The Centre of Excellence in Child Trauma, is a pioneering approach designed to streamline the fostering assessment process.

This innovative assessment integrates all necessary training, including the Training Support & Development (TSD) and All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF) requirements, ensuring that applicants are well-prepared for the fostering role.

The TFA also offers a Certificate in Therapeutic Fostering, providing foster parents with a qualification. This qualification equips them with the skills needed to support children who have experienced trauma, making the assessment process more efficient and effective.

Additionally, the program includes Trauma-Informed Panel Training to better support fostering panels in understanding trauma-informed approaches, enhancing their ability to identify suitable foster parents. The TFA has been successfully piloted and is now being implemented widely.
